Aristotle Teaching Alexander
Brian M. Rom
Founder, President and Team Leader
Teaching specialties: Math, English, ISEE test-prep. Head pro
bono tutoring program.
Brian is a successful software entrepreneur and Chairman Emeritus of
Investment Technologies,
a financial software company. He has also taught finance at
the Columbia University Graduate School of Business.
In 2007 he launched
primarily to fill the need for an exclusive, results-oriented
educational service to tutor Manhattan middle-school students in math. That basic idea eventually
blossomed into the broader teaching and mentoring programs that are now embodied in
.
He is
in-house math tutor at Manhattan's St. James School, where he works with more
than a dozen middle-school students whose abilities range from
underperformers to straight-A stars. He holds MBA's from
both the Columbia University Graduate School of Business and the University of Cape Town, South
Africa, Business School, as well as a BS and MS in mathematics and computer science, with
a minor in English Literature from Natal University, South Africa. Brian has
developed a proprietary statistical method of scoring the ISEE practice
tests that allows for an accurate mapping onto the "stanines" that are
used to rank ISEE students.
tutors use this innovative methodology to track progress of students as
they prepare for this test.
Brian is
also parent of a New York City private-school student.
Dorothy
Teaching
Specialties: Latin, History, Writing, Study Skills.
Dorothy has been teaching middle and high school history and Latin in
New York City for seven years, first at Friends Seminary and now
Columbia Prep. She graduated cum laude from Yale University with a BA
in Classical Languages and Literature. She also holds an MA in History
from the University of London and an MA in Education and School
Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University.
Jonathan
Teaching specialties: Math, Science.
Jon is currently a senior
at Rutgers University, N.J. where he is majoring in physics with a math
minor. He has constantly been one of the top students in his
classes and is currently carrying an 18-credit course load. He is
a member of the Phi Beta Kappa national liberal arts honor society and
the Alpha Epsilon Delta national pre-medical school honor society.
He has tutored many of his fellow students in physics and math.
Although he will tutor all levels,
high school students who are looking to truly excel in math and
physics as well as ace the quantitative SAT and ACT standardized tests will find Jon to be
the perfect teacher. He is planning to attend medical school once
he completes his studies at Rutgers.
Karin
Teaching specialties: English, Spanish.
Karin holds a BA,
magna cum laude, in both Sociology and Spanish from Mount Holyoke College.
She also studied at Universidad de Complutense in Spain. She
currently works in New York City as a freelance Spanish/English
translator. Her teaching experience includes tutoring beginner
through advanced Spanish at Mt. Holyoke College, teaching journalism and
essay writing at the Bronx Institute of GEAR Up, and instructing
students in the English as a Second Language program at
Asociación Tepeyac.
Penka
Teaching specialties: Math, Science.
Penka earned her MS in
mathematics from the prestigious Sofia University in her native Bulgaria
where she was a brilliant student. Her specialties include
probability, general statistical techniques, algebra, trigonometry,
calculus, geometry, MS Office and MS Windows. She also holds a
diploma in English as a Medium of Instruction from The College of St.
Mark and St. John in England. She has been a private tutor in New
York City for the past two years, working with both middle- and
high-school students. Until recently, she was a middle-school math
teacher at a New York City public school. She has also taught math
and Office Technology at the Interboro Business Institute in Manhattan.
Penka speaks English, Bulgarian, Russian and Spanish.
